La Crosse is!
Directions:
Approaching from the east
on I-90:
Take the first La Crosse
and Onalaska Hwy 16 Exit. Go left from the exit onto Hwy
16. Follow Hwy 16 past all the malls, past Pier One/Office
Depot/Famous Dave's. Proceed on Hwy 16 with the bluffs on your left
and the marsh on your right. Hwy 16 will take a sharp bend where it
intersects with Losey Blvd. Take a soft left onto Losey. (Sound
World is at that intersection. You've just gone about 5 miles.)
Take Losey heading south till you get to the big intersection where K-Mart
is. Take a right onto State Road. Go about 1 mile on
State Rd and it becomes Jackson Street and makes a sharp bend. Right
there, on your left is Jackson Plaza and Gossamer Wings is
right in front of you! Gossamer Wings is about 7 miles from the
interstate. But, hey! it's worth it!!!!
Approaching from
Minnesota on I-90:
Stay on the Minnesota
side of the river taking the exit for La Crescent and Hwy 14/61.
At La Crescent, there is only one stop light. Take a left and
you'll go across the Mississippi and you'll be on Cass Street at the
intersection with 3rd Street. There is construction on 3rd Street. So,
it's best to proceed toward the bluffs (east) on Cass Street (i.e.,
keep going straight off the bridge). About 9 blocks later, turn right
onto West Ave. Maybe a mile or so later, turn left onto Jackson (Taco
John's, Walgreen's). Drive about 7 blocks and Jackson
Street will take a sharp bend. There on your right is Jackson
Plaza. Gossamer Wings is on the other side of the Plaza,
facing the bluffs.
Approaching from
Minnesota on I-90
if you miss the La Crescent turn-off:
Take the La Crosse Exit for Hwy 35 and 53 South. Hwy
35/53 is also Rose Street and Shopko will be on your left. Rose
becomes Copeland Ave. and then becomes 3rd Street.
Go through downtown. There is construction on 3rd Street.
So, hang a left on Cass Street and proceed toward the bluffs (east) on
Cass. Go right onto West Ave. Turn left onto Jackson. Drive about
7 blocks and Jackson
Street will take a sharp bend. There on your right is Jackson
Plaza. Gossamer Wings is on the other side of the Plaza,
facing the bluffs. [Note: if you have some idea of where you're
going, you could have turned onto La Crosse, State, Main, or King
instead of Cass. Same diff.]
Approaching from
the South:
Taking 35 north from
Prairie du Chien or 14/61 from Viroqua, follow 35 (Mormon Coulee Rd.)
into La Crosse. You'll pass Shopko and Ace on your left and come
to a major intersection with Losey Blvd. Turn right on Losey.
You'll pass McDonald's and some railroad tracks and about a mile later
come to a major intersection with State Road. (You'll notice BP
on your left, Village Shopping Center on your right and K-Mart across
the street.) Turn left onto State Rd. Drive about a mile until State
road takes a bend. Right at that bend is Jackson Plaza (on your
left). Gossamer Wings is right in front of you, next to Curves.
What else is in
Jackson Plaza?
Bean
Juice Coffee Roasters and Cafe is a really cool place to get a good cup of
coffee, read the paper, check your e-mail and have a sandwich. Allure
Salon is a cool new hair salon and gift shop with lots of cool
girly stuff. (Awesome purses, watches and nail polish.) Curves
for Women is there if you want to work out.
[Yah right.] The Mac Guys
sells Apple computers. The Dragon Chinese Restaurant
has really good food and a great buffet for lunch. The lunch
menu is only $4.75 for most stuff. And the newest addition to
Jackson Plaza is the sushi restaurant, Yoko's!
It's the La Crosse area's only sushi restaurant.
Oh, and by the way, gas is waaaay
cheaper at the Citgo across the street than any place else in La
Crosse. For some reason, the gas stations on the south side have
to compete with Minnesota's cheap gas prices. So they always charge
the same as Minnesota for gas. But the stations on the north side,
closer to I-90 are a dime a gallon more expensive! The CROOKS!
And, if you're heading back home toward
Chicago, the next cheapest gas is in Beloit. Skip the Shopiere Road
exit, skip the main Beloit exit (unless you need to stop and
eat...lots of fast food and Walmart are there..) and take the last
Beloit exit (South Beloit I think). The Flying J and whatever is
across the street, ALWAYS have gas that's about a nickel or dime
cheaper than anyplace this side of Minnesota!
The pictures below are a little older
than the top one but show more detail if you click on them.

Next time you're in La
Crosse, Wisconsin, stop in and see one of the prettiest bead stores in
the world! (I can't help but brag a little!)
